Mount Sula is a popular destination that is suitable for both winter and summer activities. The mountain has two peaks, Indre Sula and Ytre Sula. Ytre Sula (1318 m a.s.l.) is the most accessible during the winter season. The mountain is also known by the name of Nordviksula.
It seems fairly steep if you look at it from a distance, but it can be tackled by most people. After climbing a couple of hundred metres up the mountain, you can choose to follow a more moderate route south of the mountaintop itself. From the top of Ytre Sula, you will get a fantastic view over the Stangvikfjorden and the Trollheimen mountain range.
The length of this ski trip depends on how far up the toll road you will be able to drive. If you park your car down by the main road, you need to ski for about 2.5 km up to the small dam. (In late winter, it is possible to drive all the way up to the dam.) Here, you can cross the river and gradually move southeast up a gentle slope. When you reach the foot of the mountain, you can either climb directly up to the peak or move south following flatter terrain that you will find further up the slope, as shown in the picture. Once you come up to the edge, begin drifting north until you reach the mountain ridge. Follow this ridge all the way to the top. This is a slightly longer but more moderate route. On your way back, you can either choose to ski right down the mountainside or follow the same ski track that brought you up here.
Drive along RV670 between Skei and Kvanne in Surnadal Municipality. Turn off in the direction of Todalen and follow the road for 5.7 km. Once you reach Nordvik, drive up the toll road. In late winter, it is possible to drive all the way up to the small dam where you can park your car.
The toll road is subject to a fee.
