Svinvik Loop Trail

Surnadal

The trail at a glance

If you haven’t already done so, take your family on a hiking trip to Svinvika! A loop trail that follows the old roads to Todalen has a lot to offer for people of all ages. The adults can enjoy a fantastic view or observe an impressive fence that used to protect the traffic from falling down a steep slope. The children will perhaps be just as enthusiastic about the llamas that graze on the fields along the roads in Svinvika. Afterwards, the whole family can take a nice walk along the atmospheric paths of Svinvik’s Arboretum. A final stop along the way might be the arboretum’s café that is open in summer. The guests here are greeted with the smell of fresh home-baked pastries, the arboretum’s specialities made of locally produced ingredients. The trail ends at the starting point.

Route description

The trail starts from the car park on the upper side of the road next to Svinvik’s Arboretum. From here, follow the signposted road into the forest that takes you up the hillside. This is the oldest rural road in the direction of Todalen. The first section of the road goes uphill, then it flattens out and continues downhill. As you walk down, you will reach a gravel road that goes up to Hjellnes. Follow this gravel road further down until you reach an old asphalt road to Todalen. Turn right and follow the old road along the seaside back to Svinvika.

There are only a few buses to Todalen, so it is recommended to use a private car.

Other

There is an open café and toilet at the arboretum during the summer season. There are also about 1.5 km of paths around the botanical garden. This network of paths is a great experience in itself, and you do not have to wonder which week to choose – something is blooming here all the time. The arboretum is probably best known for its many beautiful rhododendrons, but there are also many other plant species to see.
