Rowing to Svinøya from Sunnmøre Museum

Ålesund

The trail at a glance

There are two faering rowboats at the dock in Nørvasundet by Sunnmøre Museum. These two boats, named Leia and Linge, can be rented from the museum during the summer months.

Route description

From the floating dock, row eastward towards the bridges to the main road that crosses over the sound of Nørvasundet. Continue rowing on the north side of Nørvasundet along the coast until you pass a narrow inlet, Stabburvågen, and come to a point where you can see all of Svinøya island and the Svinøy islets. Set course for the south side of the Svinøy islets and row across Svinøysund. Here you will also be crossing the sea lane and shipping lane to Breivika/Olsvika. Once you pass Svinøyholmen, paddle up to the floating dock which is a public guest dock. Svinøya is a state-protected recreation area with public toilets in two places on the island, two floating docks and a large area with campfire pits. There is an old orchard where you can pick ripe fruit to eat at the site, as well as good opportunities for pitching a tent or hanging a hammock.
