Sukkertoppen is a popular mountaintop often visited by the residents of Ålesund. The top of the mountain offers a fantastic view in all directions including the town, the mountains, the coast, and the fjord!
Route description
Walk across the street above Hessa Primary School and follow Sukkertoppvegen Road westwards until you see the sign at the beginning of the path. It will be on your right-hand side after you pass house no. 22. The gravel road changes to a path and runs through a small forest. From there, follow a clearly defined path, which is partially wet and muddy, all the way to the mountaintop. You are about half way through the hike when you pass the antenna mast. A stunning panoramic view is awaiting you at the top! You can follow the same route back.
Alternative route: you can also choose a slightly different route to the mountaintop. Instead of walking west towards Sukkertoppvegen Road as we described above, you can go back to the roundabout in Hessaskaret. After the pedestrian crossing, walk 3–4 metres westwards (left) and follow an asphalt road up a small hill which leads to a house. Before reaching that house, you will walk up into the forest on your right. The path is clearly defined and the trees are marked, which makes it easy to navigate. The paint marks on the trees are clearly visible in the light of a head torch so you can also take this hike when it is dark. This trail alternative has a couple of steeper sections compared to the regular route, but the path here is drier, and you will get a better view of Ålesund.
