Soggnebba and the Jøtulomnen Cave
Surnadal
Soggnebba is a scenic viewing point that lies in the centre of the lower part of the Surnadalen Valley. This hiking destination is definitely worth visiting because of the fascinating view over the village and the fjord but also because of the small cave called Jøtulomnen, which you will find a short distance away from the trail.
The trail is signposted from the car park at the timber stacking area below the hill to the destination point. The initial section of the trail follows a fairly moderate forest road and then a path. A trail postbox is placed at about the highest point along the route, but in order to reach the most scenic viewing point, you need to walk further and then down again.
You can take a detour to Jøtulomnen from the lower section of the trail. Jøtulomnen is a small cave in the rock with a beautiful view over the village. The final metres up to the cave are quite steep so you might need to hold on to the rope that you will find there. If you have any walking difficulties, you might not be able to come all the way up to the cave.
It is possible to turn this hike into a circular trail through Lake Honnstadvatnet. The route to the lake is also signposted, and it provides for a gentler downhill slope than if you follow the same route back.
To walk up to Soggnebba, park your car right at the foot of the hill in Sogge. To get to the car park, drive up the Surnadalen Valley from the junction in Skei for about 4 km until you see a white farm building in Utistua, Sogge on the right side of the road. You will also see a red (and white) milk churn stand at the side of the road. Turn off the main road and carefully drive through the farm. Keep to the left and follow the rural road/forest road along the fence until you reach an area for stacking timber. This is where you can park your car.
