Around Snota from Vindølbu

This long and scenic ski trail runs around Mount Snota. You can combine this ski trip with an overnight accommodation at the Vindølbu cabin owned by the Kristiansund and Nordmøre Trekking Association. The trail follows moderate terrain that is relatively safe in terms of the avalanche risk. The mountain area around Snota is impressive. The ski trail runs through several valleys surrounded by magnificent mountains.We recommend taking this ski trip in late winter when the days become longer. The entire trip takes 8–12 hours depending on the snow conditions. This is also one of the key areas for domestic reindeer in winter so you will most likely see several herds along the way.

The trail starts from the Vindølbu cabin. Alternatively, you can start this ski trip from the car park by Pebua. Go down the hill from Vindølbu and follow the road into the valley. Before the ascent to the Vassdalen Valley begins, climb up in the direction of the Fagerlidalen Valley and follow it all the way to Lake Fagerlidalsvatna. Continue skiing up the Snotdalen Valley until you reach the lake that lies north of Mount Grøafjellet. The trail runs through Grøafjellet because there is an avalanche risk in the area down by Lake Leirtjønna. From Grøafjellet, you will enjoy an almost 500-metre high downhill slope. Make sure to keep a distance from Svarthammaren. Once you reach a flat area, continue moving north all the way to Lake Svartvatnet. From there, follow the summer hiking route between the cabins Trollheimshytta and Vindølbu. The steepest section of this ski trail is down through the forest on your way back to Vindølbu. If your starting point was Pebua, the easiest way to return would be to ski down Breiskaret and follow the road across the valley.

Drive along RV65 between Surnadal and Rindal municipalities. About 9 km east of Skei in Surnadal Municipality, you will see a sign for Vindøldalen. Follow the toll road for about 11 km until you reach the car park by Pebua. To get to the Vindølbu cabin, follow the road from the car park for about 2.5 km until you reach the mountain farm Langøysetra. Turn left at the sign for Vindølbu and walk up the hill to the cabin. The toll fee is NOK 60.
