Mardalsfossen

Molde

The trail at a glance

Mardalsfossen is the world’s fourth tallest waterfall. It can be viewed up close and is especially impressive during the summer season from 20th June to 20th August. A new hiking trail to the waterfall was built in August 2012, which gave a completely new hiking experience. Walking through the lush primaeval vegetation along the trail is an amazing experience in itself. The large old elm trees support the growth of many unusual plants and animals. Many of them are small and difficult to spot, and some animals and birds in the area are active at night. You can also enjoy abundant birdlife during the day, so sharpen your senses and listen carefully – you might catch a rare birdsong or spot a bird looking for food in this beautiful forest.

Route description

The hiking trail begins at the car park in Mardalen and meanders through the old elm forest. It is well prepared and can also be used for cycling. The first 1.4 kilometres up to the new bridge are the easiest. This section of the trail gently ascends to 200 metres. The path gets steeper on the other side of the bridge as it climbs up to the waterfall at 325 m a.s.l.
