Sandøy is an island idyll at its best! You can enjoy the peace and quiet of the island with the view of the ocean in any direction and some of Romsdal's most beautiful sand beaches. There are 35 permanent residents on the island and a vibrant cultural landscape with farms and cows, horses and sheep grazing on the fields. A nearly car-free narrow road swings through the island and offers perfect conditions for exploring the area both on foot and by bicycle.
Route description
Starting from the ferry terminal on Sandøy Island, follow the road as it drifts southeast towards the right. You will soon come to a parking place for bicycles on your left-hand side with some bicycles for rent. Then you will see L/L Sandøy Handelslag, the shop with a cosy coffee corner where you can meet some locals. You will see the Sandøy church on your left-hand side a little further away. This beautiful wooden church was built in 1812. The interior of the church is amazing. As you walk further, the road meanders through some fields and farms before it drifts towards the northwest and out to the isthmus near Sanden. The three cabins, Sandøyhytter, stand in a row facing the ocean there. Walk past these cabins out to the isthmus where you will find a Stikk Ut trail postbox. There is a picnic area here that everyone can enjoy. Both south and north of the isthmus there are long white sand beaches where you can rest, swim or simply enjoy the view and the ocean air.Alternatively, you can choose to follow County Road 211 (please see the map), which is a bit shorter. Both routes are suitable for wheelchair users and people with baby carriages.
