With the new Kviven Tunnel (Nor. Kvivstunnelen), it is now possible to get from Kalvatn to Grodås in just 6 minutes, but the locals on both sides of the tunnel have traditionally used the path over the mountain gap Kvivsskaret to visit each other. The hike to Lake Kvivsvatnet, which is described here, follows the first part of this 6 km long path.
Start by walking from Kvivssetra and keep to the eastern side of the cultivated field as you move into the valley. The path up Stigen is slightly steep, and it flattens out as you approach Lake Kvivsvatnet. The lake is the destination of this hike. For a longer walk, follow the path on the southern side of the lake through the areas of bare rock up towards the mountain gap.
Turn off in the direction of Bjørke at the new junction in Kalvatn and drive to Bueide. From there, follow a good-quality farm road (toll road) up the damaged mountain side to Kvivsdalssetra, an active goat farm in the mountains. The goats can be unpredictable so keep an eye on your equipment.
Park your car at the mountain farm Kvivsdalssetra.
