Hareid

The trail at a glance

On the route to Kvitneset you can experience towering mountains, breaking waves, an exciting history and stunning sunsets. This is the essence of Kvitneset. Kvitneset is located on the northern point of Hareidlandet out at sea by the mouth of both Breisundet fjord and Storfjord.

Route description

The route leads from central Brandal along a relatively flat asphalt road. Gradually, the road narrows and the route continues on gravel. You can easily push a pram along the road all the way to Kvitneset.   This area was used during the Second World War by the Germans as a coastal fortress from 1941 until the end of the war. When the Germans arrived in Brandal in 1941, they occupied private homes and used the village school as temporary headquarters. At Kvitneset, locals were forced to help build the fortress, and at one point the workforce included 140 men. Among other things, they built artillery positions, prison camps, command bunkers, anti-tank obstacles and a number of tunnels and caves for ammunition storage. A total of 96 soldiers and 4 officers were stationed at the fortress when the war ended. There was an average of 60 Russian prisoners, but at one point there were as many as 120. Today, most of these structures are still apparent, although some have deteriorated and become overgrown with weeds. The area is now a popular hiking area and grazing field for sheep. At Kvitneset, you can experience history and nature, enjoy the sea air, and see stunning sunsets and huge waves crashing to the shore on windy days. NB! There is livestock grazing in the area around Kvitneset all year round, so we urge you to keep your dogs on a lead, even after the end of the statutory season for this.
