Fjord

The trail at a glance

The trail to Kilstiheia offers an extremely beautiful cultural landscape and an incomparable view over Storfjorden. The entire trail runs through UNESCO’s world heritage area West Norwegian Fjord Landscape. Kilstisetra is considered to be one of the most beautiful summer mountain farms in Sunnmøre.

Route description

The trail starts at the car park in Kilsti (Gjerdeneset). Follow the signposted and marked path right up from the car park as it runs over a marshy area and up through a sparse birch forest. Cross the river that flows out of the lake over the well-maintained bridge and walk along the river up to the lake. The path takes you further around the eastern side of the lake to Kilstisetra. From here, the distance to the farm is 2 km through gentle terrain.  Climb a steep hillside from the farm up to the mountain area Kilstiheia. The path uphill is clear and well-defined. You will first walk through a birch forest and then come up above the tree line for a final ascent. The climbing gets less steep at the height of about 830 metres, and you will walk northwest along the back of the mountain area. You will find the trail postbox at the northernmost point of Kilstiheia, just before you start walking down to Verpesdalssætra and Skrednakken. Note that you can combine this hike with the entire loop trail called “Around Kilstimarkene”. Please see a separate trail description.
