The hike to Høgberget is a good fit for everyone, especially beginners. It is short, there are no steep slopes to be discouraged by, and the view over the village from the hilltop is fantastic. It could motivate you to try other more challenging hikes in the future. The shortest option is to start from the sports hall. For a longer hike, you can walk or cycle to the starting point if you live in lower Surnadal. This can also be a nice family hike on a Sunday or a warm summer afternoon. If the children get tired on the way up, you may want to take a detour to a mini ropes course in the forest that was set up by the pupils of the local school.
The destination of this trail is the Høgberget viewing point.
Start walking from the Surnadal sports hall in the school area of Øye.Follow the path that climbs uphill in front of the shed near the sports hall. Keep walking behind the multi-purpose hall that belongs to Surnadal Upper Secondary school and walk onto the forest road. You can often see a gate with a no entry sign for cars. Keep walking up this forest road. After you have passed a dam on the right side of the road, you will see a sign pointing left where the path to Høgberget begins. The path is clearly defined so route finding will not be a problem.
