Hjertøytangen across the Island

Molde

The trail at a glance

The island of Hjertøya lies just south of the centre of Molde. It is the westernmost island of the Molde Archipelago. Hjertøya along with other islands is a wonderful paddling destination. It is also a hiking destination now with the trail to Hjertøytangen available all year round. The island has been inhabited since the 18th century, and it has been used for recreation by the population of Molde since the 1930s. The Stikk Ut trail with a trail postbox on Hjertøytangen offers plenty of experiences, especially if you are not in a hurry. You can enjoy pleasant views of the city and the Romsdal Fjord along the way, depending on where you are. The Hjertøyas Venner organisation (“Friends of Hjertøya”) runs a simple café in Gulhuset on Hjertøyplassen. It is open on weekends and on some sunny days in summer. You are not allowed to make a fire on the island, but there are charcoal grills in a small cabin on the plain. From this year on, you can also loan a gas grill when Gulhuset is operated. For more information, please read the description of cultural sites.

Route description

You can get to Hjertøya Island by boat. There are guest piers on the island, so you can easily moor your private boat. The water taxi operates in the summer season.Once you land on the island, you will be greeted by a Stikk Ut sign. You will also find an information poster with a map of the island. It is attached to the east wall of the barn on Hjertøyplassen. Take a walk there and study the tourist map. There are several hiking opportunities for you. We have chosen a trail that goes through the islands highest point (35m) and continues further west. The trail to Hjertøytangen takes you through the forest and rocky areas. It is marked with Stikk Ut signs and red hearts. Many rest areas with tables are set up along the way. The way back is mostly the same, but there is a fork in the path when you come to “Pers Plass”. One path goes south along the coast. The other path heads north and goes into the forest for a couple of hundred metres to the east. See if you have time to explore the whole island. Have a pleasant trip!

The destination of this trail is in the west end of Hjertøya Island. The endpoint is where you landed on the island.
