The trail to Heltnelihuken is easily accessible from the centre of Volda and can be enjoyed in any season. This short trail along a good forest road is perfect as both an afternoon hike and a family walk with children. The forest road has a solid surface all the way to the “gapahuk” shelter, which makes it suitable for people with strollers and electric wheelchair users.
Walk east from the car park next to Volda water plant’s storage tank. Pass the boom gate and walk up a good quality forest road in the direction of Volda Ski Resort (Reset). You will reach a road crossing after about 500 metres. Take a left turn. Just after the left turn, you will walk past a sign on your left-hand side pointing to, among other things, Heltnelihuken, Ekombakken, and Kortemyra. Continue walking up this forest road for about 300 metres and you will see the “gapahuk” shelter and the trail destination on your left. Upon reaching the “gapahuk” shelter, you will get a great view of the centre of Volda, Voldsfjorden and Folkestad. For a longer hike, you can, for instance, go to Turnhytta and Dinglavatnet from here. Please see a separate trail description.
From the roundabout near Volda University College, follow County Road 45 (FV45) towards Vikebygda. After about 1 km, turn off to the left and drive up towards Bratteberg. Follow Bakkelidvegen Road for 600 metres before turning left onto Hjellbakkane Road. Follow this road until it ends past the Bratteberg school and through the right turn where the road changes its name to Bjørnevegen. Continue straight ahead for about 800 metres and turn left up Bergsvegen Road. Follow the gravel road up to the left until you reach the water storage tank of the Volda water plant. This is where you can park your car.
