Heid Hiking Trail on Bergsøya Island

Herøy

The trail at a glance

The trail over Mount Tverrfjellet in Fosnavåg follows a good-quality path and is relatively easy. The peak rises to only 100 metres above the harbour in Fosnavåg, but offers an impressive view. You will see the Sunnmørsalpane mountain range on the one side and the ocean and the sky on the other. The colours range from all shades of blue to bright orange. Some days are filled with sunshine and some are damp and chilly, so the view is always different. Watching the sunset above the ocean is an experience in itself.

Route description

Heid Hiking Trail is easily accessible and suitable for people of all ages – all year round. The trail gradually ascends from Tussabygget, Elsebø to Mount Tverrfjellet. It can be used for both a leisurely walk in the nature and a more intense workout. If you want to really get your heart rate up, the road from the area of the cultural centre is a strenuous uphill climb. Regardless of the route you choose, the trail destination is Mount Tverrfjellet.    You can park your car by Herøy Kulturhus / Sunnmørsbadet. The start of the trail at the foot of the mountain on Lisjebøvegen Road is marked with a sign. The first section of the trail is quite demanding, and locals like to call the area “Monsterbakkane” (“The Monster Hills”).  Heid Hiking Trail is perfect for both exercising and taking a stroll over Mount Tverrfjellet. The back wall of Tverrfjellet rises above Fosnavåg and the harbour. The mountaintop is only a hundred metres high but offers a truly unique view. You will see the peaks of the Sunnmørsalpane mountain range on the one side and a fantastic ocean and sky view on the other. The range of colours is striking as no day is the same. Some are filled with sunshine, while others are damp and chilly, so the view is always different. And the array of colours as the sun disappears into the ocean makes this a truly unforgettable moment.   While the mountains are ancient and still, the ocean is alive and always changing. Sometimes it whispers and sighs, sometimes it sings in a trembling voice, and sometimes it rumbles as giant waves crash against the shore. You can see, feel, and even smell it. The coastal town beneath your feet is also full of sound. You may hear a fishing boat sliding into the harbour, a car accelerating, seagulls screaming in the distance, or maybe a sea eagle soaring in the sky.   Heid Hiking Trail is illuminated, and a large Advent star is lit over Fosnavåg and the surrounding area during Advent.   You will find some exercise equipment and two gapahuk shelters on your way up to Tverrfjellet. The exercise equipment and one of the gapahuk shelters are set up along the road as you walk from Tussabygget. The other and larger gapahuk is on the mountaintop itself.

Access and parking

Turn right onto Borgarhaugvegen Road and then right again after just about 100 m into Bergslibakken Road. Drive to Bergslibakken 12, which is Tussabygget (the Tussa building) with a car park next to it.  You can also get to Fosnavåg by driving southwest along FV654. As you approach Herøy Church, you will see a sign for Herøy Kulturhus (Herøy Cultural Centre) and Sunnmørsbadet Water Park (Lisjebøvegen 10). Follow the road until you reach the car park there.
