The trail at a glance

This trail covers various types of terrain and offers a scenic view of the Storfjorden and the village of Vaksvik. In spring, you can spot beautiful wood anemones between the birch trees. If you go hiking in the evening, you can often see cruise ships leaving the fjord on their way from Geiranger. The area is usually snow free from the beginning of May.

Route description

Follow the forest road that runs from the car park for a little while. Turn off to the left and follow the waymarks in the trees and on the ground. You will walk through patches of forest and some marshy areas until you spot the Storfjorden between some old birch trees. Follow the marked path as it turns left and continues steeply up through the birch forest, past the remains of a barn and an old outbuilding. After you pass the tree line, you will get a scenic view of the village of Vaksvik. From here, follow the path all the way to the mountaintop. You will walk on some rocky surface as well as some areas of heathland. You will get a fantastic view of Mount Lauparen. Instead of going back the same route, you can walk down to Visetsetra and follow the farm road back to Hallvardsetra.

Access and parking

Drive along National Road 650 (RV650) from Sjøholt towards Stordal. Turn off the national road in Viset just before the tunnel and follow a steep road through the village until you have passed several cultivated fields and reached the forest. The car park lies on the right side of the road before Lake Hallvardsvatnet. You will see a sign for Mount Hallvardsfjellet here. Park your car at the timber stacking area on the southern side of the road between Hallvardsetra and Viset.
