Dalegubben

Ørsta

The trail at a glance

Dalegubben is the highest peak of the massif north of Sæbø. The peak is hardly visible from Sæbø but offers a fantastic view over the Sunnmørsalpane mountain range and the Hjørundfjorden. The first part of the trail to Dalegubben follows a path called Gunnarråsa that runs via Fredbua, a cabin where you can take a break and enjoy a beautiful view over Sæbø and the Hjørundfjorden.

Route description

From the car park by Kvievegen, follow the road up to the water plant (about 400 m). The path begins behind the water plant and runs along the left side of the avalanche defence structure. The path runs northwest up a steep mountainside through coniferous forest, turns westwards through flat terrain, and runs northwest again up a steep slope through deciduous forest until you reach a height of about 450 m a.s.l. You are now above the tree line, and the path crosses the river here (this is also the last opportunity to collect drinking water). The path goes northwest from the middle of the Skondalen Valley. At the top of the valley, you might come across a large glacier that you have to cross if you go hiking in early summer. Once you come up Skondalen, walk over the lowest point on the eastern side of Dalegubben. The final 50-metre ascent at the back of the peak requires some mountain climbing.

Access and parking

Turn off from E39 at the roundabout in the centre of Ørsta and follow FV655 to Sæbø. Drive along Øyragata Street past the ferry terminal and take the second exit on the left onto Kvievegen Road. Leave your car at the car park before the road to the water plant begins. There is a car park for 4 cars by Kvievegen. If there is no available parking space here, park your car in the centre of Sæbø.
