The path to Bakkegjerdet is part of the Folkestien Trail in the lower part of the Eidsdal Valley. We absolutely recommend doing a loop trail by walking from Bakkegjerdet further to Veiberg and returning down to Eidsdal School via Hjellane and Rongane. Please see a separate description of the Folkestien Trail in the lower part of the Eidsdal Valley. This trail takes you through an idyllic forest landscape with cultural sights along the way.
Route description
The trail starts at the car park just below Eidsdal School. Start by following the municipal road along the river as it runs past the school, the sports ground, and the residential area. Walk through a farmyard at the end of the road and continue along a forest road. After about a hundred metres, keep to the right when the road splits and start climbing a long gradually ascending hill. The ascent is over when you reach the Brisesletta area. This plain used to be a place where the people who lived in the lower part of the Eidsdal Valley gathered on Saint John’s Eve to burn a fire, play games, and dance. The plain is now overgrowing, among other reasons, because no animals have been grazing here for several years.
Continue walking along the forest road. You will soon come across a nice viewing point with a view down over the village. A little later, you will see an old barn on your right. After a few hundred metres further ahead, you will reach an intersection where the path to Hesthaug and Rønneberg begins to the right (west). Keep walking straight ahead parallel to the river and climb up a small hilltop where you will see a barn. This is Bakkegjerdet, and you will find the trail postbox on the wall of this barn.
If you want to do a loop trail, walk further to Bjørkli. You will come across a gravel-surfaced car park next to a house. Walk over this car park and turn left (downwards) onto the main road. At the first intersection (after about 100 metres), turn off the road and walk up to the farms in Veiberg. The Folkestien Trail continues along the first farm road to the left, over a small brook, through a farmyard and down to a campsite. Follow the tractor road further towards Hjellane, walk across a small field, then through a gate and a farmyard in Fremste Hjelle. You will soon come down to the municipal road again. Turn right and follow the road until it ends. Follow the forest road along the upper side of this farm and take a 90-degree turn downwards just after the farm. A path down to the county road runs through the village, and when you come down there, you will see the car park and the school on the other side of the river. Follow the footpath back there.
Access and parking
The trail is described with the starting point at Eidsdal School that lies about 1 km away from the centre of Eidsdal/ferry terminal. Follow the county road towards Geiranger and turn off over the bridge on the hillside just below the school.
